Businesses traditionally seek precision and practicality as a basis to plan in unique efforts for sustainable development. To contribute to the desired sustainable development, leaders in an organization indefinitely committee to the business purpose in the organization and the community around. Changes seen recently in the business world scenario call for leadership strategy that is oriented towards sustainability and purpose. The realized credit crunch puts to test the role of leader and how they align institutional purpose with external purposes. The ensuing debates examine how leadership and purpose are intertwined to relay success to the organization and assure sustainability (Kaptein and Wempe, 2002). For this paper, the 1987 United Nations Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development is used. Sustainable development meets the needs of the current generation bearing in mind not to compromise the ability of future generation to meet their own needs.

The role of business in contributing to sustainable development remains indefinite. While all business enterprises and leaders can make a contribution towards success, the ability to entrench sustainability considering the organizational goals is paramount. As the usefulness of leaders is put into introspects, new models of leadership began to emerge in the mid-20th Century. The first of these were behavioral or 'style' theories of leadership. In this case, it was considered not so much the innate characteristics of the leader, but how he/she behaved, that is important. Behavioral models present varying styles of leadership from directive to participative, person-centered to task centered. They propose that where the leader has both high concern for people and production they will be most effective (Mervyn et al., 2011).

From a behavioral perspective, the purpose of leadership and management development is to ensure the development of the most appropriate style of leadership. This trait is assumed to ensure achievement of a universal level of best practice and most importantly sustainability of the organization through consideration of relevant purposes.

This form of leadership focuses on internal and external requirements related to the organization thereby ensuring that success is not lop sided. An organization's success is pegged upon how well the leaders articulate objectives considering the needs of followers and the community around. Organization's purpose need to be aligned to the aspirations of the people working in the organization, the leaders and the community around the organization (Parry and Hansen, 2007). Consideration of a broad perspective purpose also needs to form a core component in the leadership form used in an organization.
Importance of Purpose to Leadership

Although leadership incorporates purpose in organization's need for success, it only features as a subset in leadership. Consideration that success within the organization is incomplete without incorporating internal and external purposes ought to be made. Purpose acts as a guide and a constant reminder to leaders to whom and what they owe their existence. It also guides leaders to ascertain whom they ought to serve and how well to interact with them in perusing organizational goals and development (Basu and Palazzo, 2008).

Knowledge on purpose helps leaders prioritize their objectives in a manner that will result in the overall gain of stakeholders. Leaders should consider an organization's purpose attainable by, ascertaining the desires of the followers (employees), the community around and that of the regulatory bodies are satisfied. The understanding that these purposes are deterministic of the organization's success will lay the ground for sustainable development ventures (Mervyn et al., 2011). The organization and leaders will ensure goals and needs are attended to as they embrace development and success.

Purpose helps leaders to resolve difficulties with the running of the organization. A clear definition of the organization's goal is realized from understanding the internal and external purposes. The consideration of organization's purposes directs leaders to get to the foot of a problem. They can easily device articulate measures to make a complex matters simple and find the right course towards success and desirable goals.
