3. Talk about sexism in the workplace. Have you ever experienced discrimination based on your gender. (female)

As a woman I have had some nasty run-ins with sexism in my brief employment history. As a part time clerk in Blockbuster I was often ostracized by my male colleagues who would be in a world of their own cracking sexist jokes at my expense. I reported this to my manager but he told me to suck it up and he did so with such relish. Over the summer I worked briefly as a waitress at Hooters and it was as if I was a prostitute. After one too many nasty advances, I left the job never to return.

4. Talk about the status of women in our culture; how is it possible that women still make less for performing the same job as a man, how is this tied to our historical patterns of discrimination in this society?

As explained above, historically the American society has been informed by the Christian ethic which is patriarchal in essence combined with our own unique historical experience. Society has shaped women's roles in a manner that serves men, even when women claim more of the work place. Women are seen by the employers as a liability i.e. you have to give us maternity leaves and put up with our so called "PMS" tantrums. We are viewed as emotionally unstable, indecisive and incapable of performing at the highest levels, which is why we are yet to elect a woman president. Take law enforcement for example. How many police chiefs, lead detectives, district attorneys and judges are women? The percentage is miniscule. Male egos stand in the way.
Truth is that women have worked doubly hard to establish themselves as serious contenders in the workplace. Added to this is the pressure of having to prove yourself as a professional at par with your male colleagues. This is the unkindest cut of them all.

5. Discuss homophobia, what are the social implications, how does it get played out in the media, have you ever experienced another person's homophobia?

Homophobia is extremely widespread in American society and most of us do not realize when it happens or when we overstep those boundaries. For example in almost every sitcom on TV there is always a character that is straight but fits some of the gay stereotypes. To elucidate that point consider Ted in "How I met your mother?" Throughout the adventures of Ted Mosby and his friends, someone or the other accuses Ted of being gay and Ted is hard pressed to prove otherwise. One of my close friends tried really hard not to be homophobic, but the very expression on her face when she saw same sex couples gave away years of continuous religious propaganda against homosexuality.
