For this reason, it seems strange that employers still use personality tests to gauge the effectiveness of potential employees. A better method that has gained popularity lately is the audition method. In this method, potential employees work at a job for no pay for a certain amount of time, after which employers decide whether or not they are a good fit. While some may not be willing to work in such a situation, it is a good way to see how a worker will actually play out in the workplace. Still another way to test potential employees' skills in job related tasks, performance testing, can be an affective alternative to the audition method. This means reading articles like Satterlee's in addition to consulting with experts and offering educational opportunities in their firms, in addition to counselors or other support personnel. By doing this, managers can protect themselves against the harm of culture shock. When employees and managers are affected by culture shock, they are unable to run their business properly. For instance, when managers and employees feel uncomfortable in a certain culture, they will be unable to form the business relationships necessary in order to succeed in business. In addition, it is important to know cultural customs in order to be sure that no offending takes place during business interactions.
Still, there may be cases in which a manager or employee just cannot seem to shake culture shock. In those cases, managers and employees need to learn to do what is best for the firm. This may mean replacing a traveling representative, moving that representative to the home office or entering that individual in an intensive training program. Although culture shock can be a major problem, I believe that much of it can be overcome if a manager or employee has a supportive group of people that he or she can rely on for help.
