Society's Overdependence On Computers Today, the human race has become dependent almost entirely on computers for everything from communication to research to classroom instruction. In the words of Kizza, "computer dependency is increasing as computers increasingly become part of our everyday lives" (81). To begin with, computers today effectively define how a majority of us communicate and interact with our friends and families. Emails and social media have replaced the traditional telephone and post office mail as popular communication mediums. People (especially the younger generation) now interact via social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. Most of those in their 20s would find it quite difficult to interact with their peers were such platforms to be removed from the equation.

Secondly, the education sector is also increasingly becoming dependent on computers. This is more so the case when it comes to information storage, retrieval as well...

Most particularly, one of the areas that has undergone significant transformation as far as technology and computers are concerned is the library. According to Hobrock, journals and books could soon be replaced by machine readable databases (71). Indeed, the number of people who still use traditional libraries for research or other academic purposes has significantly reduced. People are using their computers to access sites like Google, Wikipedia and a host of online libraries like Questia.
Apart from the education sector, computers are also changing the way things are done in our hospitals and health institutions. Today, a wide range of hospital procedures including but not limited to storage of patient records, patient examination and monitoring, as well as scanning and imaging are done using computers.

It is also important to note that the dependence various organizations and business entities have on computers can be regarded yet another indicator of a society dominated by computers.
