The new California Mathematics Framework (CMF) provides teachers with techniques to teach mathematics in the classroom, and it has been changed significantly from previous frameworks. The framework's changes will certainly alter how many teachers teach in the classroom, and some of the changes may be difficult to implement. To begin with, the framework provides some goals for teachers to meet in the classroom. For example, it is the goal of the teacher to "Provide the learning in each instructional year that lays the necessary groundwork for success in subsequent grades or subsequent mathematics courses" (Editors 2). This is extremely important in grades 6-12, where students will be layering new types of math learning on top of each other, such as algebra followed by geometry followed by calculus. This seems difficult to manage or evaluate, because each teacher teaches differently. In grades 6-12, students will move through the grades with many different math teachers, and each way might have a different instructional method or level. Math teachers will be proficient in math at that level, but one may be an outgoing personality who draws the students into problem solving and the many intricacies of math, while another may be an introvert who assigns problems and corrects papers with far less interaction and instruction. Each may be good teachers, but they may reach their students in different ways. Students that learn in one environment may not flourish in the other, and this seems as if it would be difficult to manage and assess in the classroom.
