Sociological Issue for Specific Neighborhood Single Parent Sociological Issues in San Leandro

San Leandro is a small city located in Alameda County. It is one of the major cities in the state of California and has the largest number of white residents as compared to other cities in the state. Despite having a majority of white people, San Leandro has a multi-racial culture attached to it. According the 2010 census, the city has a population of around eighty four thousand nine hundred and fifty, which consists of over 25,000 Asians, 642 Pacific Islanders, 23,237 Latinos and about 16,050 people of other races. One of the sociological issues in the city is increasing number of single female householders who have children, otherwise known as single parents. My literature review will shed light on this issue by highlighting what issues are faced by single parents. We will also take a look at statistics from our literature study.

Statistical Demographics Analysis of single mothers with children

There is a notable presence of single female householders with children in the city of San Leandro. According to household distribution statistics survey in 2009, single parent households constitute twenty-nine percent of all households in the U.S., of which single mother households with children constitute twenty-four percent. This trend faced rapid growth during the 1970s and 1980s. Since the 1990s, the share of single-mother families has remained...

Our studies also state that twenty-four percent of the seventy-five million children in the United States live in a single-mother family (Mather, 2010, pg. 2).
Another study shows that the major reason for the existence and emergence of single-mother families is marital failures (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development., 1990, p. 30).

Resource challenges faced by single mothers

Approximately, seven children out of ten in a single-mother family are faced with poverty and lack of rights and education. This is attributed to the fact that single-mothers face economical and financial challenges to support their children. According to the study, the most affected race is African-Americans, with poverty rates as high as sixty-six percent (Mather, 2010, pg. 2).

In San Leandro, there seems to be an equal distribution of resources for both males and females. Even though males earn slightly more than the females, statistics indicate that they face a tough time earning higher wages by working in services and construction industry.

I believe single-mothers should be allowed at least equal or more resources like education, professional training, child care and wages. This will greatly help their children's transitions into adults. It should also be noted that there is a difference in expenditures of male-single parents and female-single parents.

Sociological Theories Compare and contrast your two selected theories. The two sociological theories that will be examined are social disorganization and the social learning theory. The social disorganization theory is focused on how crime rates are directly tied to the environment where someone is living. While the social learning theory believes that people discover the world around them through modeling and observing the actions of others. (Akers, 2009) The differences between the two

London Housing The research was undertaken to study the link between inequality and depravity, poverty and crime in the housing structures of London. The study found that there is wide spread economic disparity in London. This divide is evident in the living styles and the types of housing structures that people live in. The council or housing estates of the city are primarily the residences of the lower income families. This

It has been debated that youth gangs were created in accordance with social events, and that gang members were of loose morals or inadequately socialized entities who tied up together to do delinquent activities in groups rather than as separate entities. Social Action Max Weber developed the concept of social action as a means of describing those actions that take into account actions and reactions of other people, then modifying that action based on those occurrences. Sociologists employ social action as a conceptual model as a means of determining how certain behaviors are modified in specific environments. This researcher rejects the existence of online communities because computer mediated group discussions cannot possibly meet this definition. Weinreich's view is that anyone with even a basic knowledge of sociology understands that information exchange in no way constitutes a community. For a cyber-place with an associated computer mediated group to be labeled as a virtual settlement it is necessary for it to meet a minimum set of conditions. These are:

Ethnic Social Groups. Issues Related to Ethnic Social Groups In this paper we have discussed the issues African-Americans face in terms of employment, social stability and their identity as a separate ethnic community in the United States. Sociological studies suggest that "black people" or "African-Americans" have always had little choice in the racial label given to them. Research and literature on this subject states that unlike some racial/ethnic identities, the "black identity"
