¶ … terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, because the attacks made us aware of how vulnerable we are as a country. They also helped bring the country together as one people, but this reaction has not lasted, and our country has gone back to "life as usual," with little respect for each other. The terrorist attacks were a terrible thing, but the people seem to have forgotten them.
The attacks were unbelievable, and they brought the nation together. People who had never owned a flag before flew them as a sign of unity and respect for the victims. People cared about the victims, and were ready to support the President, and the war on terrorism, because for the first time they really understood attacks could happen on our own soil.
The country rallied around patriotism, and everyone was eager to show their love of America, by flying flags, signing the National Anthem, and holding prayer vigils for the victims and their families. People came together to give blood, raise money for families, and to show America was united as "United we Stand" became the most popular expression. They thanked local firefighters and police, and stood together as a nation.
However, this feeling has not lasted, and most Americans have gone back to their "uglier" side. People are still rude, impatient, and uncaring to each other. While some people really changed their lives, and how they look at life after the attacks most people still work too much, take too much for granted, and don't take enough time for themselves or their families.
In conclusion, the terrorist attacks were the most important event of the decade because they showed just how great American can be, and the biggest fault in America. The people too soon forget, and go right back to the same ugly habits. The terrorist attacks did not change us as a nation, really. People are still rude, uncaring, and unhappy. Most of them still take life for granted, and do not care about anyone but themselves. The terrorist attacks did not make us a kinder and gentler nation, and so, in the end, they did not really teach us anything.
