¶ … 1809, by Adolf Loos and raised numerous uprisings at that time. In this article Loos comments that the human beings go through all the phases of development from his childhood to his youth. During his childhood a person is immoral and his misconducts should be ignored but if any similar misconduct is done by a mature person then he/she should be punished. He relates this concept with symbolism and ornaments. He comments that if a person paints a wall with erotic symbols, he is a criminal or a degenerate. He strongly opposes the practices of preserving and keeping the ornaments as he thinks that they are all a trash. Loos thinks that the revival of ornaments has brought significant damage to our artistic development. According to him those who are stimulating this practice are committing a crime because it all leads to the wastage of human labor, capital and slows down the evolution of man kind. According to him

"…. These people who lag behind are slowing down the cultural development You will find the man of the twentieth century getting richer and richer, and the man of the eighteenth century poorer and poorer…."

Loose thinks that the ornaments are no longer a part of our cultures and are an indication of backwardness or decadence. He argues in support of his philosophy that as the modern ways of production is more efficient and can produce at a lesser cost, hence bringing savings in production processes, an ornament brings the producer to a disadvantage of high cost of production and uneasiness of production as well. Loos thinks the artists who use to follow the old traditions are not artists in actual but clowns or house painters. According to him men of the modern age is more polished and subtle as compared to the men of old ages. When a person represents a group or follows a group he has to differentiate himself through colors and a modern man uses dress as a disguise. His sense of his own individuality is so immensely strong it can no longer be expressed in dress. He regarded the lack of ornamentation among the modern people to be a sign of logical strength.

Functionalism Today

Famous philosopher and musicologist Theodore Adorn was a leading member of the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research. His is strongly influenced by Freud and can best be regarded as a unorthodox collectivism. His work is influenced by a number of other German thinkers as well. Adorno acknowledged the emancipatory potential of art through his aesthetic theory. According to this theory art offers a vision of a different world. However, it is pointed out that only the sovereign art can offer this opposition. The essay 'Functionalism Today' is Adorno's debate on the issue of architecture and reveals the inconsistency in Adolf Loo's treatment of functionalism. He argues that the purposive and purpose-free arts are logically related and cannot be treated as entirely separate. Even the purpose free art has some social purpose hidden in it which is not materialistically apparent.

…..'The absolute rejection of style', Adorno concludes famously, 'becomes itself a form of style.'
