¶ … applying to the Masters Program in Special Education because I see it as the next logical step for my career development. I have recently completed by Bachelor's Degree in Teaching for Health/Physical Education. I also completed my student teaching requirements this past year. This experience has led me to the conclusion that I can contribute best to the field of education and the betterment of my community by pursuing further education in the field of Special Education.
While in college, I had the privilege of being an active member of the women's soccer team, including winning MVP honors in my senior year. My love of physical activity has carried through to my professional career. During my student/substitute teaching year, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to teach three sports -- soccer, basketball and lacrosse. I also teach soccer at the YMCA. Teaching physical education and coaching are natural loves for me.
During my teaching year at a local high school I was able to assist in teaching physical education classes for special education students. This experience was eye-opening for me. The children responded so well to my work and the opportunity to participate in physical activity. Even in my own family, we have had this experience with autistic relative. He is an adult now, but I remember the challenges that they faced with a misunderstanding education system. Putting these experiences together, I see the rewards of getting special education children involved in physical education throughout their school careers. This is why I want to pursue my Masters in Special Education, so that I can bring this joy and positive energy to the lives of special education children.
I know that there are significant challenges in dealing with these children, and so it is important to have the proper background in teaching special education children, and that is what the Masters program is designed for. I feel that with this education, I can begin to work with special education children and their parents to begin making a positive difference in their lives immediately. There is no greater reward that to see somebody open up and smile as the result of my work.
From what I have seen, the education system has made significant improvements over the years in how special education children are taught. When I become an active participant in this system, I feel that I will be able to further enhance the lives of special education children by contributing to their physical and emotional well-being. I relate well to children of all capabilities, and believe that the next logical step for my education is to begin my path to making a strong contribution to the lives of special education children.
