I conducted a coaching interview with a colleague to better understand their goals and learning styles in the context of adult education. This exercise connected with the principles of Knowles' assumptions about adult learning, particularly regarding the importance of self-directed, experience-based, relevancy-oriented, and problem-centered learning.

Understanding my colleague's preference for experiential learning and direct feedback will significantly shape my coaching approach. In response to their learning style, I plan to incorporate practical demonstrations and workshops, providing hands-on learning opportunities. This approach aligns with their experiential learning preference, so that the coaching is both engaging and effective (Tschannen-Moran & Tschannen-Moran, 2020). I also intend to offer direct and constructive feedback, as this will involve tailoring my feedback to be straightforward and focusing on specific areas for improvement. Thus, I could meet their expectation for clear, actionable advice that can directly impact their teaching practice (Smith, 2010).
To address their challenge of adapting to diverse learning styles, I will introduce various teaching methods that cater to different learners. Sharing diverse teaching strategies will not only assist in overcoming their current challenges but also enrich their overall teaching toolkit, enabling them to reach a broader range of students more effectively. I can also encourage reflective practice. If I guide them to reflect on their teaching experiences it will promote self-directed learning. This reflective practice would help them internalize and apply the insights gained from our coaching sessions, thereby enhancing their professional growth.
The design of my interview was influenced by Knowles' adult learning theory (Teaching Tolerance, n.d.). The questions allowed the colleague to express their goals and challenges, and give a sense of ownership in their learning. This self-directed approach is important in adult learning, as it acknowledges the learner's intrinsic motivation. The questions were also framed to draw on their past experiences. So, this experience-based approach helped connect new learning with what the learner already knows.
The interview also focused on their current challenges and goals, ensuring the relevance of our coaching relationship. This relevancy-oriented approach is crucial in adult learning, as adults are more motivated to learn when they perceive the learning to be directly applicable to their current situation.
