Consulting is a role that can be quite challenging as well as rewarding. It is important that when deciding to take on a consultant role that we understand what it takes to be successful. Being a consultant for a company can be a daunting task as it involves digging for information, asking uncomfortable questions, and making sure that all of the details are explored. Consultants need to get an overall understanding of company functioning, goals, and deliverables in order to make suggestions that make sense and can be implemented.

Regardless of the career path that we choose it is important to remember that we cannot get anywhere without hard work and dedication. We must allow ourselves to make mistakes and to learn from them rather than being embarrassed or trying to hide them. It is impossible to know everything that there is to know about every subject matter and being comfortable admitting this and finding the information will go a long way.
It is also important that as we explore career paths that we chose a career that truly excites us and that we can find rewarding. If we dread getting up each morning and going to work it is going to be difficult to fulfill our role and to take any pleasure in doing so. Allan Ellinger makes a great point when he says that if we do not enjoy what we are doing then it is time to change jobs. We spend a great deal of time each day at work and if this is not a rewarding experience for us then we should seek an environment that is both stimulating and rewarding.
