Alternatives to Incarceration
Using alternatives to incarceration for offenders who commit minor crimes has a great benefit to both the offender and then community. These types of programs are used to reducing overcrowding in the jails and to better manage costs that are associated with incarceration. There are several different options that exist that can be used as alternatives. These include: electronic monitoring, work crews, community service, diversion and flexible jail time. These are all viable options that have tremendous benefits for both the offender and the community. Research has shown that these programs are very helpful in preventing reoffending as well has cost savings.
