Characteristics Of Fungi Fungi are the most important group of plant pathogens Fungi are more than 200,000 known species among which over 8,000 species can cause plant diseases.

Fungi that primarily survive on non-living organic material are known as saprophytes. Most fungi can be seen with the naked eye for instance, mushrooms. Fungi are reproduced by production of spores and are in a wide range of shapes and colors. They produced in a wide variety of reproductive structures, which is known as fruiting bodies. Most fungal plant pathogens apart from a few that produce mushrooms; form fruiting bodies, which are microscopic in size.
