Art Analysis Basically Speaking, One Term Paper

ART ANALYSIS

Basically speaking, one can analyze a work of art by using several
general concepts. In this case since the piece in question appears to be
sculpture, the first concept is form which refers to the shape of the
object and its expression of content; the second is space which is the
bounded or boundless configuration of the object based on aesthetics; the
third is mass and volume or three-dimensional space; the fourth is
proportion which deals with the relationships of the parts of a work of
art, and lastly, scale which refers to the dimensional relation of the
parts to its totality.
These concepts or traits are utilized by many art historians to
determine if a particular work or piece is truly a "work of art." With the
piece in question, it appears to be a solid sculpture of unknown size made
of some type of metal (iron, bronze, etc.) and seems to represent a very
abstract ideal of the human form, being the lower torso, back, arms and
hands of a muscular human male. One can easily recognize this by the line
that runs down the back of the object which represents the spine. This
idealized subject is also stretching his "muscles", for one can see where
the "muscles" bulge in the middle section of the back, the shoulders, and
the biceps.
Since this object meets all of the above-mentioned traits, being
form, space, mass and volume, proportion and scale, it is indeed a work of
art. Personally, I find this object very appealing, due to its abstract
nature and the way that the light is reflected from its curvaceous surface.
My overall reaction is based on the object's aesthetic value, being one of
beauty and great eye appeal. Although it is not as aesthetically pleasing
as Rodin's The Kiss, it nevertheless serves as a great example of modern
abstract art.
