Topic for Upcoming Meeting

In an upcoming meeting, I would like to discuss the importance of political activism in the nursing profession. Although the core duties of Registered Nurses include caring for patients and providing the best care based on scientific evidence, there is an increasing need for nurses to become public health activists. Nurses are able to influence public policy. The American Nurses Association (ANA) is dedicated to improving public and individual health by linking together nurses in different geographic regions and with different areas of specialization. Nurses are instrumental in raising awareness about issues like sexual health, obesity, and drug abuse. Professional associations like the ANA have the ability to lobby Congress for federal support for public health initiatives, and also to lobby state politicians for similar purposes. Increasing access to medical care services for the politically and economically disenfranchised is another potential topic for nurse activism.
