Benjamin H. Namm Scholarship

(For Electro-Mechanical Engineering)

Every now and then, an opportunity presents itself that a person just wants to grab because it seems an opportunity made just for him. That's how I feel about the Benjamin H. Namm Scholarship. It would help me enormously in the pursuit of my dreams.

Since I was a child, I knew I must make something good out of my life. My father was a chemist, and he wanted me to go at least as high as he did, if not further. When I was only in elementary school, he taught me as if I was a college student! I would come home from school, eat a little snack in the kitchen, and then go straight to work. First and most important was math. My math book was always the first book I touched. My father was there to make sure I got all my math problems right, and if I did not, I would have to stay up through the night until I had done them correctly. Sometimes I slept only four hours or so, and no matter what, I still had to prepare myself to go to school the next day. This was every night of the week. I knew I had to learn how to solve math problems quickly because I knew my father was not going to give in. Perhaps, that is the reason why I am now excellent in math. In fact, I enjoy it very much. Some people might think my father was too strict, but I know he only wanted me to succeed in life and do well. He taught me I could do difficult things if I persisted and didn't give up. And he helped me develop self-discipline, which I will need if I'm going to become an Electro-mechanical engineer. I know I will be happy as an Electro-mechanical engineer because it involves a lot of math, which I am very good at, and I will be able to earn a good living.

In addition to my schoolwork, I work everyday after school in the school gymnasium to earn money for my school expenses. I make sure all the athletic equipment is there and that it is in good condition; that none is broken or missing, and that it is put away where it belongs. I also prepare for tournaments for the athletes to participate in as part of the school's activities.

After graduation as an Electro-mechanical engineer, I hope to establish my own business. I have the spirit of an entrepreneur! I like the idea of venturing out on my own. Owning my own business will allow me more freedom than being an employee would, but also it will entail more responsibilities because I will have to make all the decisions. It also involves more risk. But that is what the spirit of the entrepreneur is about, and that is what I want -- to be my own boss, design my own job, and complete my own work. Being my own boss will require self-discipline, which I have already shown I possess in abundance. I want to design model homes for prospective buyers. I think I can design homes that will be better and more desirable than the competition's. I will be a good citizen and an asset to my community.
