Nurse Magnetism The author of this report is offering a brief treatise on the broader subject of magnetism when it comes to nursing, learning, leadership and evidence-based practice. The five components of magnetism, as described by Debisette, will be named and described one-by-one. In the appendix of this report there is a concept mind map of the broader subject of magnetism as covered and broken down in this report. Finally, there will be the showing of a strong relationship between the qualities specified for magnet designation and the associated benchmarking strategies and evidence-based practice models. While the magnet designation is not an entirely simple thing to describe, the facets that make up nurse magnetism are fairly easy to fathom when identified and described.

Analysis

As noted in the introduction, there will be a description of the five elements of nursing magnetism as described by Debisette. Those five components are transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, empirical outcomes and new knowledge/innovation/improvement. When it comes to the new magnet model, transformational leadership is the first of the five parts. Transformational leadership is indeed the leadership style that is the desired leadership method and tool when it comes to leading and cultivating nurses and the overall nursing profession. One of the substantial upsides of the transformational leadership model is that there tends to be a much higher amount of engagement and futuristic thinking of the nursing staff when it comes to this leadership style. When it comes to nursing leadership, it is important to have quality of nursing leadership in all of the major areas including competencies, skills and educational level (Debisette & Vessey, 2011).
The next piece of the magnet puzzle is structural empowerment. This can be defined and synthesized as being a strong professional practice that is flourishing, encompassing, accessing and redesigning the nursing practice environment. As part of all of this, there is a collaboration with community-based organizations with high quality outcomes being the common result when the proper precepts and principles are wielded effectively. Further, there is a strong presence and process of professional development in an organization that is properly situated and configured. The next step would be exemplary professional practice. Debisette asserts that "there should be an understanding of the role of nursing with advancement of the role in the care delivery system and the relationship to patient, families, communities and the interdisciplinary team" (Debisette & Vessey, 2011). Further, there is a strong presence of staffing systems that incorporate patient needs, staff member skillsets and staffing mix. In keeping with benchmarks and evidence-based practice, there is a strong use of peer review and networking so that mistakes are caught sooner and easier and thus the damage rendered minimized (Debisette & Vessey, 2011).
