The fact that Tessie Hutchinson refrains from leaving the village when she is provided with the opportunity to do so can also be interpreted as a reference to Lot's wife. Similar to Lot, Bill Hutchinson understands the immorality present in the community and wants to leave. However, Tessie adopts a behavior similar to Lot's wife but instead of looking back and turning into stone, she stays and is stoned to death as a result. Tessie wants to stay in order to visit a local store and does not understand why it would be imperative for her to leave. Similar, Lot's wife is unable to comprehend why she shouldn't look back.
