Personality Theories and Conducting Assessment

According to the humanistic psychologist's theory of personality, people in their endeavor, try to reach superior levels of mental functioning and personal growth that they also evaluate through objective measures and individual reflections. Even though objective measures are not biased, they do not offer a lot of information. An objective measure of personality is one that uses research to get results. For instance, a pen and paper pre-employment test is very likely an objective measure, other examples of which include: the Second Edition (MMPI-2), Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, and other major assessments of personality/intelligence (Heffner, 2015). Humanistic psychologists use objective tests to understand better how the patient views his/herself. In these tests, choices that when chosen by the patient will give a clear description of the patient are presented as compared to the unstructured and structured personal interviews that provide just a hint of who the person is, as far as personality is concerned. can then determine why the patient has such a view of himself. Through personal interviews and objective tests, the humanistic psychologist will be able to identify, analyze and subject to change the negative traits that impede personal growth and performance, efficiently and accurately (Personality Assessment and Theories, 2015).

What stood out to you about personality assessment practices?

Each personality development theory presents its own method of assessment. Some theories consider assessment as a channel to investigate spontaneous thoughts or dreams; others state that assessment practice is critical in measuring behavior, while some say it can be used to verify a cognitive pattern. Nevertheless, all of them are categorized into three: projective, objective and subjective (Heffner, 2015). The concept of ability to measure personality was outstanding.

Various cultures all around the globe have different beliefs, customs and values that influence what research methodologies and study approaches are going to be used for personality assessments.
