At team meetings for example, there is communication with respect to some of the company's behind the scenes operations. Employees have ownership over their positions as well. There is a significant amount of respect for the employees from management as well, for example not laying permanent employees off during times of economic slowdown. One difference is that mangers do not take a stewardship role with employees. The latter are expected to define and pursue his or her own growth agendas, rather than be encouraged by management. Thus, personal development is also not something that is openly encouraged. It is not discouraged, but training and development are not a part of my company's culture to the degree that they are at the Candy Store.

This is an area where I feel that my company falls short. I would recommend to management, therefore, that more comprehensive training programs are put into place. For example, a tuition benefit could to be introduced, to allow employees to pursue part-time studies. Another policy that I would recommend is to have HR play a greater role in helping to define career paths for employees that want a degree of upward mobility. I believe that this would encourage employees to view their careers in the context of staying with the company. At present, it is too easy for employees to view their careers as being beyond the company and I feel we lose good people because of this.
