Caring for and Counseling Others in All the Seasons of Life

Caring for others and counseling them is one of the most important parts of counseling. Many people face different challenges, and counselors have a role in ensuring these people's lives improve and their mental health becomes better. In pastoral care, the psychotherapists must achieve wholeness in those seeking help (Kornfeld, 1998). The dynamics change also exists, and this change should be felt by those who had challenges initially. Nevertheless, psychotherapists should understand spirituality more. Spiritual care involves guiding the people in cultivating a great relationship with God and how to follow his teachings. It also entails using the existing community resources to develop a solution to the existing problem. It also involves healing (Kornfeld, 1998). This is the main part of caring for and counseling others. Healing means that people have already dealt with the challenges they face and have come up with amicable solutions to deal with any problems they may face.

Counseling others is a tough task. When people go through huge challenges in their lives, their behaviors may change. A change in their behaviors could mean that they may be more friendly to the counselors or not. Counselors must learn how to handle different behaviors that these individuals may exhibit. They should be more inclusive and impartial in the process, where they do not take sides as they are having a conversation (Kornfeld, 1998). The counselor may use several ways of dealing with the issues. For instance, they may use family therapy which helps in uniting the patient's family and even help use the people who surround them in the healing process. The counselor manages the expectations and focuses on the opportunities. They help in managing a patient's expectations and those of his family. Healing takes time, and it requires patience (Kornfeld, 1998). The counselor helps the patient to thrive through the transition process. He also focuses on the current opportunities that could lead to something positive and improve optimism and the patient's state of mind about the future.
