Mark Brozel's "ShakespeaRe-told: Macbeth" successfully manages to transport Shakespeare's "Macbeth" to a modern setting. Even with the fact that it is a tragedy; the film's version actually introduces a lot of humorous ideas and makes it possible for audiences to relax as they focus on gaining a better understanding of the storyline. It only takes ten seconds for her to appear on screen during the film's opening scenes in order for viewers to acknowledge that she is going to play an important role in the film. It almost seems that the director wanted to portray her as a person getting ready to get on stage -- a place that she is addicted to and that she expects to rule. She expects perfection and she is very demanding, this being observable at the point when she checks the tables and measures the distance between the knife and the fork. A waiter looks at her nervously as if he would want viewers to gain a better understanding of her ruthlessness.

The play and the film are very similar at the point when Ella and Lady Macbeth both undermine their husbands' position by making fools out of them in front of everyone. This is also the moment when audiences observe the authoritarian attitudes that these women put across. One might be inclined to believe that the play and the film are both misogynistic in character because they use a lot of stereotypes when presenting the two female characters. Ella is shown as she is applying lipstick as if the director wants to relate to how women are primarily meant to look pretty while men are only focused on hard work. Furthermore, the fact that Ella is in charge of the restaurant's appearance while Joe is in control of the most important part of the restaurant -- the kitchen -- demonstrates that the director wanted to put across Ella's frustration with her position. Her presence in the kitchen seems out of the ordinary and she seems out of place as she walks in and out of the room.

The witches and Lady Macbeth are all shown as being manipulative and evil as if these traits would be characteristic to women. However, the fact that ambition and power are shown as being typically masculine in character throughout the play means that Shakespeare actually wanted Lady Macbeth to be different from most women living during the sixteenth century. This woman considered ambition and power to be essential in her life and focused on having all other characters act in accordance with her interests in spite of the fact that these respective characters appeared to be more powerful than her. Shakespeare virtually challenged views regarding gender roles at the time and enabled the masses to picture a world where women would be successful in most of their endeavors as a result of having the courage needed to have others acknowledge their power. Macbeth's weakness creates a contrast between him and his wife and further contributes to the feeling that women can sometimes be more powerful than men. Lady Macbeth manipulates him and his misogynistic attitudes come out when she relates to how he needs to let his manhood do the thinking for him. The woman actually tricks him into thinking that she thinks of him as being superior and that it would only be right for him to murder the king.
