Identification of Core Beliefs

Crafting a statement of a personal and professional belief is a valuable enterprise because it forces individuals to make an honest self-assessment concerning what truly motivates them and provides them with the insights and passion they need to transform a mere job into a lifelong guide to living and a meaningful career. Because beliefs can change over time as a result of empirical observations and experiences derived from the School of Hard Knocks, though, isolating an authentic personal and professional belief at any given point in time can be profoundly daunting.

Nevertheless, despite these challenges, a thoughtful examination of my personal and professional beliefs helped me narrow them down into a single core belief: “I believe in the power of curiosity to drive progress and fulfillment.” Moreover, this core belief applies equally to my personal life and professional career. From a young age, I’ve been insatiably curious about how things work and why things are the way they are. As a child, I constantly peppered my parents with “why” questions (my beleaguered father eventually proclaimed, “No more ‘why’ questions!”), taking apart my toys to see how they worked (I sacrificed countless toys to this curiosity) and even numerous household objects to understand their inner workings.

For example, I vividly remember struggling for days to understand a particularly complex issue early on, scouring the limited resources that were available to me to no avail. When I finally discovered the root cause by digging deeper and asking questions, the sheer satisfaction of that “a-ha!” moment hooked me. From then on, I embraced viewing each obstacle as a puzzle to solve through relentless inquiry. Likewise, in primary school, I was that student who always had their hand raised, eager to learn more. This eagerness, however, did not always translate into successful academic outcomes since I had a tendency to read ahead and do outside readings about the subject matter that were not part of the curriculum and it turns out that at least a few educators seem threatened by independent learning.

Despite these minor early setbacks in my life, this innate inquisitiveness has been the driving force behind my professional journey as well. The multiple opportunities to constantly learn, explore new ideas, and push the boundaries of what is possible is what initially drew me to my current career field, but it has become increasingly apparent to me that this belief is readily transferrable to other professions and career paths as well. Promoting a culture where everyone feels empowered to ask questions and advance novel ideas is critical for unlocking the power of innovation. As a result, I try to make it a priority to nurture an inquisitive atmosphere by modeling curiosity myself: frequently exploring new subjects, seeking out divergent perspectives, and embracing lessons learned from failures.

On a personal level, curiosity has enriched my life by making me a lifelong learner and preventing boredom. This was an important outcome for me since I read when I was very young that, “Only stupid people are bored.” From picking up new hobbies to traveling the world and immersing myself in different cultures, there’s always something novel to explore and appreciate. This perpetual yearning to learn and grow nurtures an open, adaptable mindset, which in turn fosters empathy for diverse perspectives – an attribute in short supply today. In sum, I believe a sense of curiosity is the spark that ignites creativity, problem-solving capabilities, and personal growth. By channeling our innate curiosity into endeavors we’re truly passionate about, even mere humans can find purpose and fulfillment while positively shaping the troubled world around us.
