Summarize how Joel Spring develops the concepts of deculturalization, segregation, resistance, and political activism with the different ethnic racial groups discussed in the book called "Deculturalization and the Struggle for Equality."

The book is basically based on a history of the Anglo American domination of the various minorities within the American domain. Joel Spring dedicates the various chapters to studying and tracing the deculturizaion of the various races from Native American to Puerto Rican and then presenting their secularization. The first chapter is however, dedicated to the concept of racial superiority in Anglo Americans. Spring suggests that the major role of deculturization emerged from the Anglo Saxon segregation of the minority races. The minority races were denied their right to education and the domination of the Anglo Americans allowed them to establish a basis of privilege that later led to a slow and systematic eradication of the cultural and social values established by the various races.

The African-Americans were segregated into their own educational institutes and disallowed to participate in the major events of the society. They were decentralized from the mainstream and this caused their race as a whole to fall behind the dominant race. Furthermore, with no access to education that would allow them to move forward they lagged in the legal, economic and social arenas and with time the whole race became subservient to the Anglo Saxons. When a minority race is treated such that their culture, values and social behavior becomes unacceptable to the majority of the society their culture slowly becomes lost as in order to assimilate into the mainstream they begin to adapt themselves to the majority values. Hence, in time the concept of segregation may decrease but the minority as whole loses its cultural values and becomes desegregated.

By showing the manner and ways in which the minority races like the African-Americans, Native Americans, Puerto Ricans, Mexican-Americans, and Asian-Americans were first segregated and then deculturalized, Spring creates a scenario of slow and steady deprivation that caused whole cultures to be eradicated.

The best part about the book is that the readers are allowed to view U.S. history of progress and success from a multi-cultural view which underlines the current debates of multicultural education. The racial concepts of the English colonists denied the Asian-Americans their rights, the cultural values of the New World arrivers caused the whole race of the Native Americans to be segmentized and lost amidst a brutal domination. All these scenarios are finally reinforced with the debate of multiculturalism in present day America creating a very believable and understandable racist America.

American History has always been an idealist view of events. Students have read about the power of democracy and equality. However, events like slavery and the eradication of the Native American race are proof of the fact that equality and democracy do not always go hand in hand. As the founders took into play the concept of Manifest Destiny where Americas role in the world was seen as a conquering force the values of democracy were at times undermined.
