Educational Goals Statement -- College Statement
What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities, and what you have gained from your involvement.
My intended major course of study is Business. My interest in the subject developed naturally out of being from a very poor country: Indonesia. Modern world history clearly illustrates the fundamental importance of business; it is the way nations rise out of poverty. Developing the business sector of modern societies is the only way to strengthen the nation and improve the everyday lives of Indonesians. Naturally, improving the quality and availability of public education is the only systematic way of increasing a nation's economic status and global participation in commerce.
Business is only one of many fields that contribute to the strength of nations: science, medicine, and technology all need qualified leaders if a nation is to become a so-called "First-World" nation. But symbolic logic and business processes have always seemed to be the best match for my natural skill sets and interests. Ever since I can remember, I have easily understood mathematics and economic transactions on the small scale. The logical path to the maximum profit at minimum cost always came very naturally to me.
Certainly, success in big business is very much dependent on the quality of education and training; however, it is also about people. In many ways, that has always been true but it is even more applicable in the modern age of business globalization and large-scale multiculturalism. Small scale business requires understanding the neighborhood dynamics; large scale business requires understanding geopolitics and world history in addition to business processes. Past experience suggests that if well trained business leaders are important during times of economic opportunity, they are only that much more important in times of recent economic crisis.
Because my most natural interests and talents seem to be in business-related concepts, the most useful contribution that I can make as a professional might be playing a small role in helping improve the economic circumstances that account for perpetual poverty and deprivation in my country and other countries. I am confident that with enough dedication, man can solve the major social, economic, and political challenges to peace and prosperity for all instead of for only a relatively small few. Once poverty can be reduced and education improved, economic prosperity often takes on a momentum of its own and allows many to achieve success by developing and dedicating their talents and abilities to something productive.
