Social Sciences

There are many fields of study that fall under the umbrella of the social sciences. Sociology is usually the first thing that comes to mind when the term is mentioned, but there are several other fields of study under social sciences. A person studying in this field could also study such things as anthropology, history, archeology, and geography to name a few. Since studying in these fields generally does not command the large salaries as say a degree in computer programming or finance might, many wonder why someone would study in any field under the social sciences umbrella.

Even though studying in this field may not seem like a guarantee to a fast track career with a large paycheck, the social sciences offers a broad range of knowledge that can be used in almost any career field. A degree in the social sciences helps the student become a diverse, independently thinking individual who understands society and the people around him. Since we know that there are many fields of study which fall under the general term of social sciences, this paper will give a brief description of the benefits of studying in a few of these fields.

Most everyone is familiar with the field of sociology and there are some who may feel that this degree is not technical enough. Many also wonder what can be done, in terms of a career with a degree in sociology. It is not a requirement to go on to graduate school or a necessity with a degree in sociology. Studying in this field not only prepares a person for a great career, but it is a great preparation for dealing with everyday life. According to Mesny, the study of sociology enhances one's common sense abilities (2009). This has the effect of preparing one to think independently and strategically.

Anthropology is the study of humans. This field has four categories: cultural, physical, linguistic and archeology. All are viable fields to study in as they prepare one to deal with different cultures. Our work world is become so diverse that the study of anthropology makes sense. Everyone should learn how to deal with diversity not only in the workplace, but in life in general. Gabbo states that studying anthropology (especially cultural) allows a person to expand on their potential and pursue different goals (2009).

Geography is another field of study falling under social sciences. This is a subject taught in most grades schools but almost forgotten by the time the student reaches high school and college. We tend to think of geography as knowing where different countries and bodies of water are on the globe. We also tend to forget about geography as we grow older because the location of countries does not change. If something is unchanging, why bother to study it. This is a fallacy because geography can be used for some many things. Groeneveld et al. say that geographic can help detect racial disparities in who receives quality medical can and who doesn't (2005).
