These include various facets of nutrition, kinesiology, injuries, areas of athletics which may be stratified by sports or competition, yoga, pilates, and other type of exercise. These disciplines relate to an assortment of career options in which individuals can either work as a general fitness trainer or actually specialize in each of these sub-disciplines. One of the most important requisites to becoming a personal trainer is to have the proper education.

Such an education usually necessitates the completion of a high school diploma or of its equivalent. Frequently, there is a plethora of post-secondary education opportunities that employees in this field wish for their candidates to have fulfilled. These include formal collegiate education in a subject related to this field such as physical education, exercise science, kinesiology, and others (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015). Such an education is conventionally required for pursuing upper level employment positions in the field of personal trainers.

In addition to the foregoing basic education requirements, there oftentimes is additional education in the form of certification, licensure, and registration requirements that constitute a more specialized form of education and training. There are many certification programs for those hoping to attain a position in personal fitness. However, it is possible for individuals in this line of work to achieve certification simultaneously as they work in this capacity.

Despite the fact that there are numerous entities that offer certification -- which may vary according to location and type of specialty, it is advisable for prospective candidates to attain one that has been certified by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (Bureau of Labor Statistics). In most cases, these certifications require successful completion of examinations that are based in part on taking a test, and in part of demonstrating practical competence. An entry-level personal trainer has a host of responsibilities.

In general, it is necessary for these professionals to begin by assessing the physical condition of the clients that they are working with; at this stage it is not uncommon for the clients to also articulate their goals for their physical training. Then, it is important for the personal trainer to determine a plan to help the client reach his or her goals. That plan can include exercises, weights, dietary components, and other facets of health and wellness.

Personal trainers also demonstrate how to do exercises and how to utilize certain equipment for physical fitness. The continuing education requirements for personal trainers varies. Many of these requirements are linked to the form of certification these professionals have. Several forms of certification mandate that individuals continue their education in their field by taking online classes or interacting with professional organizations in some capacity.
