Research in a modern context relies on the strength of the argument which it relays. Every research paper, regardless if it is literature, political, biological, or anything else, solely depends on the argument which it presents. Thus, the argument, or the claim, is the most essential portion of any research paper, especially based on a literary prompt. However, this argument must be backed up with both a strong and confident structure, representing a clear construction of one's argument along with the dismissal of a proponent opposite voice.

Every research paper depends on the strength of its argument. The argument of any literary essay actually represents the collective answers to the given question combined strategically to provide for a concise and structured response to the essay prompt. Normally, the answer to any prompt must be broken down into to three separate sections, which will later make up the three points of the major body paragraphs. Three is not an essential number for every assignment, however, it provides a good structure for the purposes of prewriting and organizing the structure of the argument which the author wishes to present. The combination of these three factual elements represents the collective answer to the literary essay prompt, and therefore the basic backbone of the standard research paper's thesis. The finalized thesis is the argument, and therefore must be carefully constructed using specific dialogue and semantics in order to most efficiently present the authors argument, (Booth, Colomb, & Williams, 112). The argument is the essential claim of the entire paper, and therefore must be the most complex and coordinated piece of any research essay, regardless of the genre which it reports to.

This argument or claim must be backed up efficiently by a supporting structure of factual and commentary evidence. Every argument must have at least three components which represent the proof of that claim. These three portions represent the three sections of the research paper. Within these portions, each component must be based on a concrete point, and have three sub-points to back up that point. Therefore, within a five paragraph structure, each point must have three facts to back it up. These facts are presented with one sentence in order to portray a respectable opinion in the literary field, the researcher must coincide both facts and opinions with the standard literary terms of study which make up the discourse of literary theory, (Lentricchia & Mclaughlin, 24). This understanding od literary discourse will strengthen any argument and represent a more structured approach to answering the prompt.
