Abstract

Electronic ignition systems offered much promise to the modern engineer from the moment they debuted. This paper offers a progress report on the research being conducted with these systems through simulation software programs, providing a snapshot of the pros and cons of such tools. This paper also offers a brief rundown of the history of ignition systems and a comparative perspective.

Examining closely ignition systems which came before the electronic ignition helps to not only demonstrate how valuable the current electronic ignition system is but demonstrates how the design and dynamics of this particular system were influenced by the structures from which it originated.

The four systems examined will be the hot tube, magneto, battery and computerized. More than anything, the overwhelming objective of this master's thesis is to develop a lucid understanding and detailed knowledge of how electronic ignition systems function within cars. Having a greater understanding of this dynamic will also help to allude to the potential advancements and evolution that electronic ignition systems will eventually be able to make. This paper will also discuss the similarities between the electronic system and a range of other ignition systems and will scrutinize the different types of electronic ignition systems -- along with the strengths and weaknesses of each variety.

Aside from taking for granted the high tech gadgets of today, it's also definitely possible that engineers take for granted the wealth of simulation programs available today that help one to explore and manipulate various types of ignition systems, all from the safety of one's computer. This paper examines a range of simulation programs which demonstrate how the electronic ignition system works, focusing on programs like Multisim and Simulink. The paper intends to assess these simulation programs fairly and uniformly, while explaining their pros and cons in the simplest of language. Simplicity is of the essence here when it comes to simulation programs, given the complexity of the task at hand. Simulink was chosen as the most superior tool for simulation given its profoundly user-friendly aspects.

This paper also takes a long look at how the development and evolution of digital technology influences the electronic ignition system of today. Digital systems mean a whole new playing field for ignition systems, one where facts are assessed and commands made and followed immediately. This paper discusses the present and future impacts of the digital system and how all the potential can be realized and harnessed to ultimate advancement.
