Rebuilding Character and Organizational Values
Observation
The article highlights the need for role modeling as a way of rebuilding character and organizational value. Of greater importance here is the informal role models that have street value as opposed to the structured and scripted role modeling which has become more of a tradition in urbanizations. This is seen to be lacking in the public office where double standards are often the case where the employees try to change the rules to suit them. This arouses the concept of ethical challenge and how it is handled by different employees. Some people will use the previous experience to make a decision, some vividness criterions yet others the confirmation bias. In order to rebuild the integrity in the public sector, there is need to move away from the internal perspectives and experiences of how the organization behaves, to the point where we focus on the expectations of the public. The police and correction department are depicted as rigid, an aspect that they need to drop. The police department needs to have better supervision, thorough accountability, shared sense of purpose as well as cooperation and transparency in order to rebuild the character and the organizational values of the law enforcement.
Interpretation
The outstanding issues in the article is the act that even the written down rules and regulations of daily operations among the law enforcement can act as a hindrance to portrayal of the good character of the department and water down the values. The eye opener here is that the focus needs to be on the public that receives the services.
Application
As a future leader in the organizations I will work with, I will strive to know what needs to be improved to make the life of the recipients of our service better in as much as I would be interested in the rules of the organization.
