The USASC or United States Army Signal corps happens to be a division under the army department that is tasked with management and creation of information systems and communications for the control and command of the joint armed forces[footnoteRef:1]. Similarly, the thirty seventh signal regiment in British Army happens to be a reserve regiment of the army in signals Royal Corps. This regiment is a component of the eleventh signal contingent that provides the army with military communication during national operations[footnoteRef:2]. The objective of the signal regiment is to offer support for control and command of the joint arms forces. The term signal support can be understood to mean network support entailing information assurance, network management, and dissemination management of information, and the management of electromagnetic spectrum[footnoteRef:3]. [1: Signal Corps History” United States Army Signal Center, 2013] [2: 37th (Wessex and Welsh) Signal Regiment, Royal Corps of Signals,2008] [3: Signal Units, The United States Army Signal School, 2015]
The signal support details every aspect of the installation, design, communication networks employing multiple and single satellite, terrestrial microwave, tropospheric scatter, messaging, switching, visual information, video teleconferencing, and suchlike communication systems. The signal support combines tactical, sustaining and strategic base communications, management and information processing systems into flawless global network of information which supports dominance of knowledge by the army, coalition, and joint operations.
Role that the Signal Regiment has to develop and enable the Synthetic Training Environment
The cultivation of innovative simulation technologies for the purpose of training is expected to revolutionize the signal regiment. Simulation technologies will enable the convergence of virtual, live and constructive skills hence enabling the army units to realize greater warfare readiness, and give comprehensive training to the soldiers and units. The United States army has to train the forces in readiness to win the complex world which requires leaders that are versatile and institutions that succeed in chaos and ambiguity. In order to realize this need the army strategy to deliver and alter land power capacity as the strategic tool of the joint force of the future needs a training environment that has to be flexible, and environment that supports repetition, minimizes overhead, and an environment that has ability to be relied upon when need arises[footnoteRef:4]. [4: Ryan McAlinden, Synthetic Training Environment, 2017]
The STE (Synthetic Training Environment) will offer specialized training in line with the current needs through the most recent mobile and immersive technologies. STE happens to be a joint environment of training capable of optimizing performance of human beings within the multiple levels of environments of mixed realities. STE offers intuitive and immersive capabilities as a way of helping signal regiments keep up to speed with changing environments of operation and enabling the training of the army under integrated arms operations. STE shifts the training of the army from the facility base allowing the army to practice on need basis either at the combat centers, home stations, or at the deployed location4. The STE has ability to leverage the modern technologies that can handle ambiguity and mixed realities through blending of virtual, physical, and augmented realities. STE therefore provides leaders and commanders with various options that can help enable effective training over the dynamic and active complexities of army missions. STE will offer instinctive services and applications that make it possible to entrench training inside the select platforms and workstations of the mission command.
The ITE (Integrated Training Environment) is quite limiting and hinders the signal regiment from realizing total readiness. ITE does not have adequate realism, affordability, interoperability, adaptability, reliability, and availability required for the prevention, shaping and winning in the operation environment’s multiple domains. STE Can change with technology in order to duplicate the existing and the coming force structure, warfarin functions, weapon effects, human interaction, JIM capabilities, threat capabilities from close proximity, and the populous urban terrain. STE has ability to train various units from integrated multiple domain land operations including space, cyber, sea, land, and air.
The signal regiment has to modernize and mature big data and artificial intelligence within the army training ranks. These big data and artificial intelligence capabilities will be integrated into the synthetic training environment architecture and the simulation software used in training prior to the rolling out of the STE program[footnoteRef:5]. Further, the signal regiment will have to build reliable training simulation software in order to maximize on mission command simulations and to kindle every MCIS (Mission command Information System). The wide ranging constructive simulation has to be modernized by the signal regiment. This will only be possible through outstanding maturation of the technology. This way the STE will enhance the training capabilities of the army through enabling detailed and extensive training of the battalion. [5: Synthetic Training Environment (STE) White Paper, Combined Arms Center - Training]
Today there is shortfall in the signal regiments ability to carry out and combine the various levels of constructive, gaming, and virtual training as a joint or independent component. The signal regiment needs to develop the converged live, gaming, virtual and constructive simulation environment in order to allow the force to perform the same level of training as they do when actually fighting. With matured synthetic technologies developed by the signal regiment it will be possible to simulate actual fights with the real word enemy in the ambiguous and mixed reality environments.
The STE will allow the army to train in the same manner as they would fight on an environment that resembles the actual fighting terrain. STE will be available for the soldiers anywhere for their training either at the combat centers, home stations, or at the deployed location4. The STE will replicate the existing and coming future megacity, electronic warfare, space, and cyber threats. Through STE the existing training breaches will be alleviated as well.
