Although humor has become more complex across time, it did not change in its basic form, as it continues to trigger laughter when it is put forward in the right way. Seinfeld and Friends are two of the funniest comedy series in the nineties, and according to some, the funniest movie series ever produced. Although the two sitcoms differ in structure, they appear to address the same public, to people wanting to be entertained by a group of individuals who constantly come across funny events.

Episode 51 in the Seinfeld series, "The Contest," is a good example of the humorous situations which occur in the lives of Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer. Sex was never a taboo topic in Seinfeld, as it was addressed in numerous episodes previous to "The Contest." Even so, some might consider the concept of masturbation (on which the episode is based on) to be too much for Seinfeld's usual audience.

As the episode progresses, one is likely to be left with no power to speak because of the laughter provoked by the hilarious characters. The very fact that the script is written with the intention of talking about "you know what" without even mentioning the word masturbation makes the episode even funnier.

The overall theme of the episode is not necessarily aimed at sexuality, as it is actually meant to follow each of the actors in their attempt to win the bet. Everyone eventually fails in spite of their endeavor, as they constantly come across events which keep them from going through with the plan and that are likely to be found extremely amusing by the public.

Seinfeld can certainly be considered funny by the audience today, even if people today appear to pay more interest to slapstick comedy. Contemporary comedy has fallen to disgrace and there are little sitcoms that can actually be considered funny because of the humor in them, instead of being considered so for the exaggerated events they display.

The humor in Seinfeld is more subtle and this is one of the main causes for which it can be appreciated. Despite the fact that "The Contest" presents a topic that was rather unmentionable in the nineties, is succeeds in breaking barriers in order to prove that taboo subjects can actually be funny. The use of taboo-focused concepts is frequently used in sitcoms today, as directors are aware that this is a good way of attracting today's audience.

Similar to Seinfeld, Friends is one of the most rated sitcoms in the nineties and is responsible for bringing humor into the lives of millions of individuals. Season four's episode eighty-five, "The One With the Embryos," provides insight on how the guys know more about the girls than vice-versa.
