Motivation is and has been hugely important in my academic life thus far, and my interest and passion for learning comes from both a desire for personal growth and from my professional aspirations. I have 33 years of military service; discipline and commitment are part of my core: they are characteristics that have become second nature to me, and I apply them and the principles that have lived by to my education. I view learning as a continuous process, as a life process: an opportunity to refine my knowledge and skills in ways that will set me up to achieve all of my future goals. Of course, this achievement will be determined by how much I actually put into the pursuit. Having already earned several degrees, I recognize the deep value of education in opening doors that would have otherwise remained closed. Education is like the higher path that leads one up the tallest of mountains. There is no other way to climb upward but through dedication, devotion, time, persistence, and willingness to learn. Along the way, you acquire knowledge, strength, problem-solving abilities, and more, and it is always rewarding in many other ways, too. My motivation is also deeply rooted in my own personal sense of purpose—knowing that each course I complete brings me one step closer to achieving personal fulfillment and professional advancement.
In the past, I have faced motivational challenges, particularly when struggling with my PTSD and trying to maintain good balance of my many multiple responsibilities. There were moments when academic tasks felt a little overwhelming, and I found myself buckling under the demands of too many duties. This kind of pressure, which comes from feeling overloaded by too much all at once, can be especially damaging to one’s morale, sense of purpose, and ability to keep going. I did not want to be weighed down by the added psychological stress of becoming demoralized and unmotivated. So, to address this, I sought treatment for PTSD and developed structured routines so I could manage my time more effectively. I found that the real difficulty for me had simply been a too loose regimen. When you actually put everything where it belongs, including the right tasks at the right time of day, you find that the weight becomes much more bearable. Additionally, I have never really lacked motivation when subjects felt tedious or outside my comfort zone, because I see the end goal in everything. Any tediousness or feelings of discomfort are immediately overcome by setting small, achievable goals and rewarding progress—which is something I learned how to do in my military career. This term, I plan to continue dedicating specific hours each day to academics and maintaining a positive mindset. I will also monitor my self-talk script, replacing any arising negative thoughts with positive affirmations like, “I am capable, disciplined, and resilient.” If I ever feel unmotivated, I will remind myself of my past successes and the bigger purpose behind my education.
Psalms 139:1–3 and 14a resonate deeply with me as an individual and an online learner: “O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways...I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (NKJ). These verses remind me that God knows me fully—which is ultimately one of the most motivating realizations one can have in life. God knows my soul, my mind, my heart, my place in life, my struggles, my strengths, my efforts—He knows everything about me. I don’t have to feel like I am all alone—because I am not. It is comforting to recognize that I am not alone in my life or in my academic journey. God understands my challenges and is always there, always providing me with the strength to overcome any difficulty, to bear it manfully, even if at times it seems like I am on my own. As an online learner, this passage reassures me that even in moments of solitude, I am seen and supported by Him and His wonderful grace. The phrase “fearfully and wonderfully made” reinforces my belief that I am equipped with unique abilities and the necessary resilience to bear up under and get through any and all personal and academic challenges. Knowing that God has a purpose for my life gives me even more motivation to persevere. It also makes me want to praise Him for He does sustain me, and Has always been there for me. I can find peace simply in looking around at the wonders God has made: all of life is full of this wonder and it cannot be denied. We only lose sight of it sometimes when we focus on some aggravation, some self-sorrow, some injury—but these are distractions. True peace is in God. For these reasons, I approach learning with deep gratitude, and trust that my efforts will bear fruit.
