Abstract

The scientific revolution and the age of classical science have had a severe impact on society and made it possible for it to experience great progress as a consequence of the fact that technology had advanced significantly. Humanity was especially ignorant up to this point and technology actually made it possible for the masses to look at the world from a different perspective. People learnt that a lot of things they previously believed to be impossible were actually possible and joined the rest of the world in a struggle to achieve progress. The Scientific Revolution basically represents the moment when the social order started to experience massive reform as a result of technological advancements.

Attitudes during the Scientific Revolution

The scientific revolution and the age of classical science have had a severe impact on society and made it possible for it to experience great progress as a consequence of the fact that technology had advanced significantly. Humanity was especially ignorant up to this point and technology actually made it possible for the masses to look at the world from a different perspective. People learnt that a lot of things they previously believed to be impossible were actually possible and joined the rest of the world in a struggle to achieve progress. The Scientific Revolution basically represents the moment when the social order started to experience massive reform as a result of technological advancements.

One of the first steps in the fight for progress was related to rejecting traditional values with the purpose of embracing newer ones. Nicholas Copernicus was among the individuals who actually believed that it was wrong for society to stick to conventional values, as this limited people and made it very difficult for them to experience progress. "Copernicus proposed a sun-centered or heliocentric cosmology with a moving earth rotating once a day on its own axis and orbiting the sun once a year" (McClellan III & Dorn, 203).

Paracelsus employed a similar attitude to Copernicus and got actively involved in rejecting values that had no scientific basis. One of the primary fields that he attacked was alchemy, as he considered that it was absurd for the masses to focus their resources on a field that was utopic in general. Galileo Galilei's work was exactly what Paracelsus expected from the world. The Italian astronomer invented the telescope and made it possible for people from around the world to think about astronomy as one of the most important domains ever discussed. It is safe to say that the telescope played a major role in the scientific revolution because it enabled the masses to understand that logics was essential and that it was irresponsible for someone to put across solid theories as long as the respective person was unable to support them with evidence.

One of the most prominent figures of the scientific revolution is Sir Isaac Newton. In contrast to many of his colleagues who directly rejected values promoted in the past, he focused on adapting these values to newer ones with the purpose of determining which of them needed to be kept and which needed to be discarded. "To earlier discoveries in mechanics and astronomy he added many of his own and combined them in a single system for describing the workings of the universe; the system is based on the concept of gravitation and uses a new branch of mathematics, the calculus, that he invented for the purpose" (The Scientific Revolution). The fact that Newton was responsible for devising a series of intriguing theories influenced the masses in supporting most of his ideas, even with the fact that some of them did not have a logical basis. Corpuscular philosophy related to how light was composed out of tiny particles and that the law of mechanics could provide further information regarding this theory.

Although many people might consider that individuals like Newton need to be criticized as a result of issuing a series of theories that could not be verified, the truth is that they actually need to be praised as a result of having the courage to perform innovative research with the purpose of elucidating many mysteries present in society ever since the beginning of time.

Charles Darwin is yet another visionary from the scientific revolution era who raised public awareness concerning one of the most essential features of mankind. By relating to the concept of evolution as one of the primary reasons for which people managed to progress, he directly contradicted religious ideas and a historic background that was largely invented by people across time.

While Darwin, Galileo, Newton, and Copernicus each focused on particular domains, they all had something in common. They each possessed a form of curiosity that has been present in people across time and they each made full use of this ability. Even with the fact that they were aware that it was difficult and even dangerous for them to put across certain ideas they did not hesitate to support their thinking and largely contributed to society as it exists today. These people demonstrated that science was much more complex than the masses previously thought, but also managed to emphasize that it was essential for each individual to contribute in the process of evolution in order for society as a whole to experience success in a series of fields.
