Leadership in ancient Israel was heralded by great monarchs. These were individuals with exceptional strengths, and ones in which the people had great faith. Three such monarchs were King Saul, King David and King Solomon.
Starting with King Saul, God put great faith in him, and expected him to rely not on his own strength but on God himself for guidance. Chiefly, this is what God expects of all individuals. Saul's pride fell so hard that at that time he did not have the courage to speak up for the Lord and suffered insults of the enemy. Yet he chose to go up against a man who was upright in the eyes of the law.
