Healthcare and Nursing

The most important characteristics and attributes a person must have to be successful in patient care are empathy, the ability to listen and communicate with the patient, kindness, patience and clinical expertise. I believe that the ability to identify with someone in their current situation, even if it means sharing a cup of tea and letting them "remember when" before helping them perform ADL's they are no longer capable of, is crucial to creating a feeling of trust. It is important to validate a person's humanity. This enables their willingness to work with you to determine and achieve goals they may have concerning their health care. Kindness in caring and patience in listening is at times, all a patient needs. Having excellent clinical skills is equally as important. Loving kindness does a nurse no good if they injure their patient through lazy practice and incomplete knowledge.

A rate myself as excellent in these areas. I do not believe that there is anything more fulfilling than having the knowledge and expertise to provide quality care to someone in need. I especially feel that the elderly hold a treasure of life experience that we have lost in our day-to-day lives. They deserve the highest quality of care and caring that I have to offer.

A community care provider is expected to work alone most of the time. This requires a certain level of self-sufficiency and assertiveness. I have found myself to be capable of handling emergencies in a professional manner. In one instance, a patient had fallen and had possible broken their hip. They were unwilling to acknowledge their pain, but I convinced them to stay where they were until the ambulance arrived. It took assertive behavior to keep them down, because they were afraid. I was able to speak calmly with them.

As a CCE, I would most like to provide quality care in a manner that provides dignity to the patient. The ability to remain independent is a valuable part of living. I believe that this program provides the training necessary to have both the clinical and psychological training necessary to achieve this goal of caring.
