According to a United Nations Security Council report 25 time as many Afghan citizens die every year as a result of hunger and poverty than from violence. One of the world's poorest nations, 7.4 million, or about one third of the population is "food insecure." Another third of the population is on the borderline to that status (Loewenberg, 2009).

Over 40% of the country subsists on less than 45 cents a day. Over half of Afghan preschool children are chronically malnourished. An estimated 1.2 million children younger than 5 and 550,000 pregnant or lactating mothers are at risk of falling into severe malnutrition. The country also has one of the worst maternal death rates in the world (Loewenberg, 2009).
Conclusion

The world produces enough food to feed everyone. World agriculture produces 17% more calories per person today than it did 30 years ago, despite a 70% population increase. This is enough to provide everyone in the world with at least 2,720 kilocalories (kcal) per person per day ("2012 World Hunger and Poverty Facts and Statisics" 2011). Sadly, the problem is that many people in the world do not have sufficient land to grow, or income to purchase, enough food.
