Counseling: The Hybrid Model Application (Case Study)

During the first counseling session as a crisis counselor at a local agency, the Hybrid Model of crisis intervention would be quite valuable in Rita’s case. The first stage of engaging Rita and initiating contact with the counselor is of utmost importance since building trust for effective counseling cannot be overstated (Crits-Christoph et al., 2019). With greater trust, a higher probability of better coping strategies in the therapeutic relationship between the patient and counselor is ensured. The case mentions Rita not being comfortable in stating her private information to the counselor, despite finding the best possible solution at the time as she suffers from severe depression.

The reasons for her depression are several, including domestic violence from her partner Ayesha, her conflicting relationship between Sam and Ayesha, and her fear of a negative image of her children or society. Rita is also concerned about her children’s safety with Ayesha, and the underlying issues with the Hybrid model emphasize this fact. The underlying issues must be interpreted deeply before providing Rita with safety and crisis intervention. With her reluctance to open up with a stranger, Rita might experience fear of getting intensely submerged while stating her inner negative emotions occurring due to depression and being exposed to violence from her partner, feeling insecurity and other relevant feelings of disloyalty and lack of worthiness (Kleiven et al., 2020). These are natural feelings that a counselor has to make the patient comfortable about so that Rita does not become afraid of her inner experiences and releases herself from the shield of hesitation to open discussion with the counselor.

The third stage in the Hybrid model comes when the counselor assures Rita that he is here to help her. He should portray behavior that would mean providing care to her positively and helpfully. Her depression and other pertinent reasons need effective addressing with positive psychological support. Such support could be given to her through crisis intervention and suggested treatment like cognitive behavioral treatment for Rita’s apparent acute stress disorder (ASD) (Cahill et al., 2005).
