¶ … schools nursing require a background check incoming students. What opinion ? 2) Should credit checks allowed? 3) Do feel checks legal ethical?.
Background checks have become a requirement for most nursing schools around the world as a way of scrutinizing students in order to prevent the admission of students who do not have clean records in terms of safety and security. A background check is generally the process of looking up a person and compiling their criminal, commercial and financial records in an effort to assist in the evaluation of candidates in terms of their qualifications, personal character and fitness.
Background checks are generally important in nursing schools since they help to give a kind of clearance that the documents being presented as admission documents are valid and it also helps to prevent any unlawful discrimination against the candidate for admission in the university in college. Background checks also help to prevent identity theft where a person may present documents that are valid but do not belong to them rather to another person (Topper, 2004).
Though background checks are often looked at as violation of a person's right privacy the overall advantage of doing the check itself is greater than this violation. This is because through doing the background check, it prevents enrolment of a person who is not worthy of being in the institution.
Background checks should be allowed since there are many reasons why the check itself is conducted. In a study that was conducted on the effectiveness of background checks, it was found that half of all job applicants who had applied for the job had given information that differed from the reality (U.S. Department of Justice, 2006). Therefore, it can be expected that the same thing would happen in college and university applications.
Background checks have also been found in the same study helped to differentiate applicants who are simply prospects from those who are actually best suited for the job itself. The study found out that the background check helped to differentiate employees whose qualifications were almost similar (U.S. Department of Justice, 2006). The result of the background check itself gave the differentiating factor. The same thing applies to college and university applications.
Lastly, another study found out that background checks help to make sure that the environment where students are learning is safe for all students since it prevents the enrolment of students who have bad safety records such as firearms dealers, etc.
For these reasons described here, the background check should be allowed since it does assist the student population in general and levels the grounds for enrolment since it prevents applicants from presenting invalid documents or valid documents which are not theirs. Therefore the students get a fair ground on which they are considered for enrolment.
In my opinion, background checks are legal and ethical. Though there has been huge debate on the issue of background checks, looking at the advantages which outweigh the disadvantages in many aspects, the background checks are legal and ethical. One of the reasons for this is that the background check helps in the validation of application documents that are presented.
