Good points on APN role development issues and barriers, especially when it comes to regulatory challenges and role ambiguity. I would like to add one more barrier, which is the lack of mentorship and support during the transition from RN to APN (Li et al., 2023). The shift from being a task-oriented RN role to an APN with many new responsibilities that require good decision-making can be overwhelming. However, structured mentorship experience can make the transition easier, and APNs with mentors tend to have greater job satisfaction (Li et al., 2023). A well-designed mentorship program can help new APNs be better leaders, better clinical decision makers, and more confident overall (Tracy & OGrady, 2022).

Organizational resistance is another consideration I would bring to the fore. APN role integration can be stymied if there is resistance within the organization itself. In some healthcare settings, physicians and administrators may be reluctant to fully utilize APNs due to traditional hierarchies and misconceptions about the APN's scope of practice, and this is a problem...

To address this, healthcare institutions should actively promote interprofessional collaboration, clarify role expectations, and advocate for policy changes that support full practice authority for APNs.

…but I think that the Consensus Model gives a better regulatory blueprint for improving the legal aspects of APRN practice.

Another important point to think about is the impact of the Consensus Model on healthcare access. States that have fully adopted the Consensus Model and granted APNs full practice authority have seen improved access to primary care services, especially in rural areas (Tracy & OGrady, 2022). This just goes to show that regulatory models can directly affect professions, and in this case they can also have a big impact on patient outcomes and the increase of healthcare fairness for all.
