IOM Report

The impact of the IOM report on nursing education.

The IOM report had an impact on nursing education by transforming the focus. This is occurring by concentrating on a number of different areas to include: basic standards and continuing education. The combination of these elements is changing the nurses' role (based upon needs of stakeholders). ("A Summary of the February 2010 Forum," 2010)

Altering the basic standards is when there is focus on how to attract and retain more graduates. What the report found is that there should be a number of tools used in conjunction with each other to include: loan forgiveness, scholarships and special awards. These techniques will increase the amount of candidates who qualify. Over the course of time, this ensures that the health care system has enough nurses to address the needs of patients. ("A Summary of the February 2010 Forum," 2010)

Continuing education is an important part of helping to improve professionalism. This is because everyone will learn about new procedures and how to utilize them. After going through a number of courses, is the point that the individual will develop a lifelong passion for learning. This is when they will seek out advanced degrees and training to deal with these challenges. ("A Summary of the February 2010 Forum," 2010)

These different elements are showing how nursing education is changing. This is occurring through providing students with greater amounts of flexibility in meeting basic standards. Then, having them go through various continuing education courses to develop a lifelong passion for learning new ideas. These factors will improve quality and change the role that nurses are playing in the delivery of health care services. ("A Summary of the February 2010 Forum," 2010)

The impact of the IOM report on nursing practice, particularly in primary care, and how you would change your practice to meet the goals of the IOM report.

The impact of the IOM report is to transform the role of nurses in a primary care setting. The way that this is taking place is to utilize their time more efficiently. This is because most practitioners will spend 55.9% of their time focusing on documentation and coordinating with other professionals. This is problematic, as these kinds of issues will take away from the time that is spent working with the patient. ("A Summary of the December 2009 Forum," 2009)

To deal with these challenges, there needs to be a greater emphasis on utilizing technology (such as: electronic medical records). This will increase productivity and communication. When this happens, patients will receive more effective treatment options. In a primary care setting, this is ensuring that everyone is able to maintain consistently good levels of health. ("A Summary of the December 2009 Forum," 2009)

At the same time, the report recommends that nurses play a greater role in advising and assisting physicians about treatment options. This is because they are working with the patient and understanding specific factors that could have an impact on their health. During the course of diagnosing a problem, is when they can provide the doctor with specific information. This will help everyone to determine the best way to treat the patient. Over the course of time, this will lead to a reduction in medical errors and mortality rates. ("A Summary of the December 2009 Forum," 2009)

To change the practices in a primary care setting, the nurse must work in collaboration with the physician when providing advice. This ensures that everyone receives the best care which takes into account the patient's needs. In the future, these practices will make the facility more responsive to stakeholders. ("A Summary of the December 2009 Forum," 2009)

The impact of the IOM report on the nurse's role as a leader.

The report is changing the nurse's role. This is because they are expected to serve in a capacity that will improve care. The increasing number of patients is forcing these responsibilities to shift. Moreover, there are shortages in physicians and nurses. The combination of these factors means that the individual nurse must become a leader inside the organization.
