What I Learned from an Interview with a Medical Writer

Section I: Who Is the Interviewee?

The interviewee, “Jennifer Close,” is a medical writer with 9 years of experience and a master’s degree in life science from the University of Tulsa who is employed full-time in the industry. This individual reports that she transitioned from academia to a professional capacity within the industry, demonstrating career progression in the medical writing field.

Section II: Learning Outcomes

As a result of this interview, I learned that medical writing has different specializations including publications, medical affairs, and commercial writing. In addition, the field offers good job market stability and work-life balance with remote work opportunities. An important point that emerged during the interview was that transitioning from academia to industry requires specific skill adaptations.

Likewise, I also learned that networking and professional connections play a crucial role in achieving success in the medical writing field. Indeed, it became clear that “who you know” in the industry is just as important as “what you know.” Finally, yet another valuable learning outcome was that the medical writing field provides opportunities for career growth while maintaining work-life balance.

Section III: Insight. What insight did you gain?

In retrospect, I was most surprised by the emphasis on the various types of medical writing roles that are currently available as well as the flexibility that the career provides with remote work options. As a result of my interview, I wanted to learn more about specific internship programs and entry-level opportunities in the field. In addition, I was impressed by the perquisites that the medical writing field affords practitioners, with high priorities placed on a ensuring a viable work-life balance as well as the varied career advancement opportunities that are available to medical writers.

Based on this experience, I intend to focus more of my efforts on building my professional network, particularly through LinkedIn and informal contacts, and follow medical writing companies to stay informed about new and evolving opportunities in the field. In addition, I also intend to remain vigilant concerning potential professional career opportunities in similar fields such as medical journalism and public health policies in the future.

Section IV: Linkages

One of the more interesting outcomes of this interview was the fact that several of the themes that emerged closely align with typical WomenLead issues. For instance, the importance of continuing education and appropriate work-life balance considerations were key themes from the interview as well as the importance of thoughtful career transition and professional development. Likewise, another significant linkage with WomenLead issues include the importance of mentorship and networking for professional advancement and growth in a specialized field such as medical writing and related occupations.
