Life Is Ironic

Speech Life is Ironic

There is an old adage that beauty is found only in the eye of the beholder. Consequently, I have look at myself and I am forced to accept, that I am handsome. What I have just said may be ironic or not, depending on your perspective of me. The major challenge with life itself is that is steeped in irony. The people that you meet do not appear to be who they are. This is not simply duplicity or an attempt to confuse you; rather it is the complete logical outworking of the irony that is interlaced within all of life.

This is our life - full of irony. Sometimes I would think, "Is it really possible to be good without being bad? How would you know you are already good if you have not been bad at all? While there is a sense of moral absolutes the real meaning of private behavior is hidden. Only the person doing the action understands why they are doing it. So that actions that appear externally good and virtuous may in fact come from very terrible places. The applause that is given for the good behavior is also given to the bad source of that behavior.

When I watch television, I see a lot of people who want to be famous. Why do they want to be famous, when actually once they become famous, there is nothing left but to become infamous? I think people do not realize that. It is also funny to see those celebrities who work hard all their life to become well-known, and then wear dark glasses to avoid being recognised. They do not understand that their celebrity comes with a price. They receive the money, power and status without thinking about the cost. Privacy means that you are not a public figure; they seem not to understand that you cannot have them both. Fame and privacy are almost mutually exclusive (that's irony at its best).

I had this experience one time when I came to school late. I was holding a large cup of hot coffee when I tried to sneak in without making too much noise. Then suddenly, I dropped the cup I was holding and everyone was now looking at me. What's more embarrassing is that I had to sit in the front row so I ended up like a superstar being watched by the whole class. It was not fun. It really wasn't. But in the end I think it is better to be looked over than to be overlooked. And if my classmates would talk about me, well, I would say, "there is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." I am glad I am at the better side.

When I was younger, my mother would always tell me, "Son, honesty is the best policy. If you are honest, people may cheat you, but be honest anyway." George Washington once said "it is better to offer no excuse than a bad one." I believe that's true, very true actually. But a voice keeps telling me to remain silent and not say anything. Speaking to people may create distance between me and them. What I intended as an action to bring people together does the exact opposite. I wonder if my mom and Mr. George Washington have realized that too. Too much honesty may cost you friendships and even love. People really don't like honesty; most people prefer to be lied to. Anyway, I do not strive to find answers to every question, because it is frustrating when you know all the answers, and nobody bothers to ask you the questions.
