Missed Promotion Exercise

My goal for this meeting would be to express my disappointment with the fact that I did not get the job. I want Chris to look at matters from my perspective and to understand that I am frustrated because I know I had the abilities required for me to be promoted. I do not want this meeting to consist out of several arguments, as I simply want to provide Chris with how I see things and accept his reasoning, regardless of whether he will say I deserve the promotion or not.

Chris is well-acquainted with my qualities and it is probable that he did not have a say in my situation. Even with this, he is likely to support the company at this stage because it would be in his best interest to do so. This does not mean he is going to deny the fact that I am qualified for the job, but that he needs to find common ground between the company's view and my view and to mediate these two sides in order to resolve things.

I am going to devise a series of rather simple arguments that cannot be fought and I am going to make it possible for Chris to understand that I have been wronged. The reality is that I deserve the job and I am going to be a significant asset for the company if I get promoted. They need to be able to see things from my perspective and they are going to be left with little to no room to argue.

I am good at what I do and I deserve the promotion. However, I need to accept the fact that I am not perfect and that I obviously have a biased perception of my role in the company. Other people might see it differently and that can thus use that type of thinking to explain why I didn't get the job.

a. I believe the promotion discussion was especially successful and that I managed to get them to see all of my qualities. I practically provided them with a complex image of who I am, what I can do, and the role I can play in this company.

b. I was most concerned with procedural justice.

c. The fact that the company in general is going through a problematic phase right now and that the people in charge of promoting me (aside from Chris) are not really familiar with my persona contributed to me being concerned with procedural justice. With the difficult economic times, the company's managers considered that it would be in the firm's best interest to bring outside individuals to the company in order to refresh its general strategies.
