Ideological difference has, of course been a recurring theme in textbook censorship battles and curriculum dis8utes over the course of this history " Curriculum is described by Croc o as being "an educational tradition providing 'culturally constituted tools for understanding and reforming the world'. (Crocco, 2003-2004) IV. Vinz: Competing Versions of How to Educate for Cultural Understanding

The work of Ruth Vinz entitled: "Learning the Blues: Transcending Essentialist Readings of Cultural Texts" states: "The history of multicultural curricula is a story of competing versions of how to educate for cultural understanding." Vinz notes that instability of meaning and interpretation are only one difficulty that is inherent in attempting to understand different cultures within the society or the educational institution as she states that the students in the study discovered that: "...no simple representation or answers exist." (Vinz, 1994) Vinz concludes her work by stating: "Today's social studies curriculum, in theory if not in practice, celebrates the notion that the tent shielding American society is a multicolored one, with lots of room for diverse attractions inside. If we are indeed, as sociologist Alan Wolfe suggests, "One nation after all," then it seems fitting that the social studies curriculum should both promote and reflect this new civic identity."(Vinz, 2003-2004)

While the curriculum may be changing, it should not forget that developing insight into concepts, not just learning facts is important. According to Amy McAninch (2010) of Early Childhood Research and Practice, curriculums must reflect the principles of educational theorist Thomas Dewey and teach students how to learn. For example, when teaching geography, instead of learning facts about China and Australia, students should learn about what categories make up

It would be agreeable that the growth of multicultural focus is something that has remained a long journey towards our present understanding of the topic. The path towards our contemporary multiculturalism remains a distinct area of psychology that developed some years ago. The historical development shows clearly that there have been different individuals and thinkers who have focused on the ethnic associations and issues related to human interactions (Cauce,

To achieve this objective I recommend instituting a task forced charged with the responsibility of working with teachers to develop a set of both short-term and long-term goals. In regard to alignment with long-term goals, our program evaluation designers and
