Professional Development Plan: Master of Science in Nursing program Introduction

My professional development journey has involved both classroom learning and professional experience. The learning has equipped me with the nursing knowledge that is relevant in line with the profession that I am pursuing. The hands-on experience has enabled me to practice the knowledge acquired and encountered real-life situations where I could apply the knowledge. This professional development plan outlines my professional goals and identifies knowledge and experience gaps to be filled during the achievement of such goals. It puts in place a learning strategy that will be important in achieving the specific goals and professional target. In this study, I will outline the specific strategies that I will use in achieving the identified learning goals.

Personal Introduction

I have had the desire to pursue nursing as a profession from a tender age. When I graduated from high school, it was apparently clear to me that I wanted to undertake a course in nursing. I have undergone the undergraduate training in nursing and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. The information gathered through my undergraduate training will find great application in theory, research and practical learning in this Master of Science in the nursing program. Moreover, I have worked as a nurse in the emergency room. The working environment presented exciting and new challenges that helped equip me with practical skills of nursing in the emergency room. The Application of evidence-based practices in this nursing environment well as the challenges I encountered will be critical in shaping my learning objectives as well as contribute to the understanding and research required in this master of nursing program. Lastly, I have undertaken several certification programs such as life support certification, pediatric life support, and cardiac life support. The knowledge gathered from these certification courses will form a foundation for my Master of Science in Nursing degree.

Therefore, I will use the program to sharpen my research skills because they will help me in carrying out effective nursing studies and becoming a useful entity in nursing because of my contributions.
Professional Goals

I am committed to completing this program to enhance my nursing practice. I have three professional goals that Master of Science degree in nursing will help me to accomplish. Firstly, I would like to become a nursing specialist in cardiac care. Having worked in an emergency room, I have been exposed to the first-hand experience of the numerous challenges that patients with heart conditions undergo under the care of non-specialized nurses. With specialized skills and knowledge in cardiac care, I will offer proper nursing care for patients ailing from the problem. Moreover, this knowledge will help me to work and lead nursing units particularly in coronary care units, intensive care units, and ambulatory settings.

The master’s degree will help me in realizing my professional goal of being a cardiac care specialist in different was. For instance, the degree will equip me with more knowledge about the specific clinical and care needs of patients with heart complications. As a result, I will nurture the already acquired knowledge from the cardiac life support Certification Course thereby enabling me to specialize in cardiac care. Secondly, I will be able to research the area of cardiac care through this program. Research is a fundamental requirement in the pursuit of a master’s degree in any field. My research will focus on cardiac care while in pursuing my master’s degree. This research will help me gain more insight about cardiac care and hence improve my specialty in this field of nursing. Lastly, this course has a unit dedicated to cardiac care. In the end, it will equip me with relevant information about the existing evidence-based practices in the care of cardiac patients (Smith, 2011).

My second professional goal is to be certified as a cardiac care specialist. Whereas the nursing license is mandatory to practice nursing, it can only be employed for a general nursing practice purpose. A certification is a form of licensing…
