Narrative Writing
The beginning of my journey began with great uncertainty. The skies were as dark as day could be. The rain fell upon me as though the sky had opened up and let the entire world's water pour upon the earth. I could not see what was in front; I could not see what was behind me. I feared that this terrible storm would not only continue to cloud my journey, but that it would define the tone of my travels. However, after a few hours, I was able to find a momentary reprieve. What I saw before me was astounding. Gone was the darkness and before me I found the lushest landscape of saturated greens, yellows, and browns. As a drove across and along the winding roads home, I noticed that the path before me uncoiled itself as a snake on the move. The landscape transformed itself from the lushest greens to the most delicate grasses of golden and rose hues. I transitioned from rolling hills to stagnant plains. It was a beauteous sight to behold.
Part B
In writing the brief story passage, I tried to establish a theme of traveling from a place of uncertainty to a place of hope and beauty. In order to convey and develop this theme, I used descriptive language to describe not only the darkness I perceived, but also how the darkness transitioned to light, how the landscape also reflected these changes, and how the road's changes paralleled the change in mood and landscape. I decided to write the above passage in a first person narrative because it allows the reader to understand that this is based on personal experience and allows them to derive secondary meanings from the text. Furthermore, I believe that writing the passage in first person allows the reader to not only be transported and experience my journey, but also to assume my identity and see the world from my perspective, which may in turn, force them to question or realize their view of the world.
