Nursing Industry Nursing is one of the most important professions in the world today. It involves not only physical healing, but also healing on a deeper level, where the care giving extends to the patient's environment and relationships to speed the healing process. The nursing environment then often also concerns politics and political involvement. As caregivers who operate in an inclusive environment and relationships, it is often necessary for nurses to be aware of political processes and policies. In this way, nurses can ensure an optimal environment for their patients and the healing process in general.

Des Jardin (2001) defines politics as "a means to an end." Nurses who are concerned with policy formation outcomes must involve themselves in politics. There are a number of ways in which this can be accomplished. Voting is part of the importance of this process of awareness and action, while values dictate what action office holders will take to promote the nursing profession and its inherent values of individualized patient care and collaboration among health care professionals.
The author then suggests that nurses should not only be aware of policy issues and how these can be integrated in the profession, but also of how nursing values and issues can be shared with politicians to promote these values. The author therefore promotes an active role for nurses to involve themselves in politics and public policy that can affect patients and their well-being.
