The nursing coursework I have taken so far focuses in particular on the second and fifth competencies, regarding information and technology. Courses like anatomy and physiology are fundamental information-gathering classes that provide a firm foundation for aspiring nurses. Thorough knowledge of the human body, its functions, and its diseases, plus knowledge of medicine are imparted through nursing classes. Furthermore, nursing instructors also demonstrate how technology plays a role in the profession. We use computers to access medical databases, for example. Therefore, the second and fifth competencies are related to one another. In addition to their use as information technology, computers also provide the backbone of almost all electronic medical equipment. Nursing courses also show how sophisticated machines such as CAT scans are implemented in hospitals.

I am particularly weak in particularly those competency areas that the nursing courses cover: information and technology. Regarding resource allocation, interpersonal skills, and systems understanding, I am innately strong. However, I still require more actual knowledge and information about the human body and about the nursing profession in general. I am still studying and acquiring the information needed to become a successful nurse. For example, I know very little about treating and dealing with infectious diseases. Next year hopefully I will be able to take courses in this particular field and apply that...

Similarly, I am also weak regarding the functions and implementation of medical technologies. Not only do I need to learn more about nursing software systems such as patient databases, but I also need to learn about the various machines used in hospitals to test and treat patients. Technology is fundamental to the nursing profession, which involves more than just bandages and bedpans. Nurses also need to know how to operate complex electronic equipment. Therefore, I will need to improve my competency in the areas of information and technology.
Nursing is a challenging and rewarding career, one that I look forward to performing once I complete my education and obtain my degree. Perhaps more than any other profession, nursing entails all five of the competencies: resource allocation, information, interpersonal skills, knowledge of overall systems, and technology. In the hospital setting, all five of these areas come into play. However, nursing courses mainly reflect the second and fifth competencies: information and technology. While many instructors touch upon the interpersonal aspects of working at a hospital and while there are courses in hospital administration, for the most part I have encountered mainly courses that deal directly with information regarding the body and its illnesses. Finally, I need to improve my understanding of medical information and medical technology, thankfully the two competencies emphasized by my nursing education.

The shortage of nursing staff remains a major challenge in the U.S. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) (2014), the shortage is expected to be even greater in the next one decade or so. The shortage has been fuelled by factors such as reduced enrolment into nursing schools, increased retirement of the nursing workforce, as well as higher demand for healthcare due to population ageing and

Career Development There are a number of factors and individual characteristics that impact career development and vocational choices. These factors can be external or internal or a combination of the two. Career choice for some can be determined by the path taken by

Nursing Leadership and Conflict Management The complexities of communication in healthcare are accentuated by the urgency of providing expert-level care and continually fueling a high level of professional competence with one's peers and the broader professional communities. The more time-sensitive a given field of nursing or medical practice, the more critical it is to have highly accurate, relevant and timely patient data to make decisions on (White, Thornbory, 2007). Across the

Nursing Contemporary Nursing Stereotypes on Television Author Carol J. Huston writes in a boldly honest narrative that the nursing industry must seek to be populated with "smart… bright…highly motivated" nurses who "want to make a difference" in the lives of the patients they tend to (Huston, 2013, p. 319). Nurses must "…stop acting like victims" and instead use their best instincts and have a positive influence on public policy (Huston, 319). In
