Nursing is one of those professions that provides the opportunity not only to further oneself on a professional level, but also on a personal level. It provides the individual with the opportunity to connect with others by providing a platform of health care, while also providing a helping hand that promotes not only short-term healing, but also long-term well-being.
This makes nursing one of the most caring professions, as it provides the nurse with the opportunity to use his or her skills, and also to lend a hand above the duties of simple physical health care. In this way, nursing extends to caring for the whole person rather than the physical being alone. This is one of the major factors that has attracted me to the profession throughout my life.
According to Limon (2001), there are four central concepts that are central to the metaparadigm of nursing, including the person or client, the environment, health, and nursing. The person or client refers to the person receiving nursing care. This includes not only individuals, but also families, groups, and communities who are affected by the care provided. The environment refers to the internal and external surroundings of the client.
This includes not only the physical environment, but also the people in it that could affect the client and his or her health, such as family, friends, and significant others. Health refers to the degree of well-being that is currently existing within the client. Finally, nursing refers to the nurse providing the care in terms of his or her attributes, characteristics, and actions. These four metaparadigm elements interact in a wide complexity to provide the nurse with the tools necessary to affect healing for the client.
If all four are in harmony, health and healing are much more likely than if they are not. To help the client achieve health, the nurse is often required to act not only as physical healer, but also as teachers, patient advocates, counselors, and so on. When a client's environment does not promote his or her health, for example, it is the duty of the nurse to do what he or she can to create a more healing environment.
In a counseling capacity, for example, a nurse might act as mediator between a well-meaning family and a client who is failing to achieve health because of misguided actions. On the other hand, family members can also provide valuable information on the needs and most effective care paradigm for the client, which would create a need for the nurse to become a student (Kocisko, 2010). Furthermore, nurses are students in terms of continual research and updating of their skills in order to maintain a good knowledge base.
Only by regularly updating their skills and knowledge can nurses be truly excellent care givers in a world of constantly evolving knowledge, especially in the field of health care. Personally, I have always been attracted to the health care profession, not least because I grew up as a member of a medical family. As such, I have had more opportunities than most to be involved in the medical profession, both by association with my family members and as a result of my own drive to learn and do more.
I have therefore worked as a medical assistant, infertility specialist, and ultrasound technician. In all these professions, the most rewarding aspect of the work has been that I was able to provide a sense of positive change and better health to people, in whatever small capacity. This is what I want to do in my nursing career. By being involved with people in these professions and by association with my family, my passion has become one that focuses on a drive to help people in as many ways as.
